Sunflowers
India Ink
This piece was done painstakingly dot by dot with a quill and a bottle of ink for over twenty-five hours. Instead of focusing on the signature colors of a sunflower, I chose to emphasize the texture of the plant. Using a variety of patterns I tried to capture the roughness of leaves, the gradation of the petals and the radial design of the seeds in the center.

Downtown
Acrylic
This 4 ft by 4ft painting was very challenging to paint. Due to its massive 16 square foot size I had to change my methods of painting by using larger paintbrushes and wider strokes. The color scheme was new to me; I usually stick to realistic colors or monotone. The fun colors and quirky patterns illustrate the character of our town and its residents.

Winter Blues
Chalk Pastel
"I like these cold, gray winter days. Days like these let you savor a bad mood." ~Bill Watterson
Even though this portrait is showing a setting it evokes a vibe of coldness, loneliness, darkness and depression through the monochromatic color scheme, facial expression and clothing. When I look at this, I think of January; gone are the bright lights and jolliness of the holidays and the New Year hoopla. All that remains is cruel winds, dark days and the dread of midterms.

I used an old photograph of my mother and as a reference photo for this piece. The photograph was special to me because its one of the rare moments when I actually show affection. The photo was originally taken when we were releasing a turtle that had been a preschool class pet into the wild. I chose to draw it in pencil so I could really capture the different values in the hair, shadows, folds of the shirt and faces.

Chapel with Ivy
India Ink Washes
This was based off of an old photograph from the 1930s of a monastery overlooking the Hudson River. I came across the picture when I was doing an internship for a local architect who was renovating the chapel (in the far back). This was really cool because I was able to visit the site a few times and see the difference eighty years can make to a place.
